No matter what weight lifting routines that you do, if you goal is to obtain significant strength, negatives are needed. Negatives are a weight lifting technique that can provide your body with the additional oomph it needs to be as strong as it can be.

First, it’s important to clarify what strength is in terms of weight lifting. Weight lifters judge their strength by how much they can lift in one rep, or max out. What are negatives? It’s a weight lifting technique where the lifter lifts a weight approximately 25% heavier than his max out. To perform a negative, the lifter brings the weight down as slow as possible and once the bottom is reached, a spotter takes the entire weight and presses it back up to the top for another rep.

Why are negatives so good for strength? Because you are placing a weight much heavier than you can handle, the muscles in turn are forced to become stronger. Within a few weeks of doing negatives, you’ll start to notice the difference when you max out on your exercises.
