Fear – even the intense physical kind – has nothing on panic attacks. In the throes of an attack, you feel dizzy, nauseated, numb, and even choked. As if these aren’t bad enough, each episode may last up to 10 minutes!
Thankfully, there are now many ways to treat panic attacks. Even better, psychotherapy innovations and comprehensive guides such as Panic Away have made it possible to treat panic attacks without need for anti-depressants and beta blockers. Here are some ways to treat panic attacks sans medicines and doctors.
1. Breathe.
When you panic, you forget to breathe. You take shallow gulps of air. This aggravates your problem and leads to dizziness and chest pains. Avoid this complication by practicing deep breathing.
2. Stay in the here and now.
Do not imagine gory scenarios. Rather, focus on what is taking place and how best to respond to it. In this manner, you do not unnecessarily raise your anxiety levels.
3. Accept. Then, acknowledge.
At the core of panic attacks is fear. Confront fear by coming to terms with your problem. What you accept, acknowledge, and have made peace with cannot hurt you.
4. Live with the symptoms.
Stand still. Sit still. Do not rage against the symptoms. They will pass.
5. Encourage yourself.
Talk to yourself. Tell yourself you can pull through. The body’s capacity to heal itself may yet astound you.
Remember, panic attacks may be scary but beautiful thoughts are more powerful. A panic disorder may temporarily ravage your body but not your soul.
