Diabetes and its Effects

General No Comments »

How can the consequences of diabetes change your life? That’s a topic on the minds of many who have been diagnosed with the condition.

You can observe many of these consequences in the symptoms of diabetes: there is more frequent urination, as much as once an hour. Therefore diabetics are also regularly thirsty. In addition, because diabetics lose an amount of the glucose (energy) they require through their urine, diabetics have a tendency to feel tired and weak.

If the diabetes is left untreated, the individual will find they have more urinary tract infections. They may also feel their fingers and toes prickling due to their veins and arteries have become constricted. Their vision could fuzz because unabsorbed glucose is also released into the eye’s fluid. female diabetics may find their menstrual periods stop and male diabetics can become impotent.

Once diabetes is noticed, the condition can be controlled, either by diet alone (for type 2) or with the use of insulin (type 1). One of the everyday consequences of diabetes is the individual must understand how to monitor their blood sugar levels often, even many times per day. To do this, the affected person must prick their finger to get a a small amount of of blood. This blood is put onto a test strip and introduced into a handheld mechanism to measure its glucose level. As time passes, the fingertips become painful.

If the person has insulin-diabetes, they must regularly inject themselves in the arm, abdomen or thigh. Fortunately, there are pumps attainable that eradicate the need for repeated shots.

Because blood glucose levels change, it is critical that diabetics plan their lives. They should really have glucose tablets or small, sweet snacks convenient in case their glucose levels fall too low. They also need to make certain not to exert themselves as heavy activity can bring about glucose levels to fall all of a sudden.

One other consequence of diabetes is a change in what is eaten. Most diabetics gain by religiously following a prescribed diet that limits fats, sweets and alcohol. It’s essential to follow the diet exactly. Nevertheless, this can be a constructive change as they learn to eat more healthy and to elude junk food. A diabetic diet can be followed by almost anybody, regardless of whether they have the condition.

If diabetes is left unrestrained, the individual can develop kidney, eye, foot and nerve problems and are at greater risk of heart attack and stroke.

The effects of diabetes are not pleasant to go through. Nonetheless, by scrupulously following your treatment plan and eating a healthy diet, diabetics can live near normal lives.

What Can I Do To Make My Rotator Cuff Therapy Easier

General No Comments »

Everyday we hear about athletes injuring their shoulders in the process of game play. It is usually a rotator cuff shoulder injury and it seems like those athletes are able to recover and return to normal physical activity much faster than the average person. So, why is this? What do they do differently than we do?

They really don’t do much differently. Most of them do, however, have access to a wonderful little device that we could also benefit from. It is a handheld ultrasound massager. These can now be purchased over the counter and are very inexpensive.

They are also very good for providing a deep heat massage during rotator cuff therapy and can aid in soothing an aching shoulder. Another benefit to the ultrasound massager is that it helps to improve the blood flow to the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff needs this additional blood flow to speed the healing and repair of any torn or damaged muscle or tendon fibers.

Another key trick to faster healing of the rotator cuff is a consistent practice of the R.I.C.E. theory during rehabilitation of the shoulder. R.I.C.E. stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. All of these will add in reducing inflammation and pain and swelling.

Taking Care of Rotator Cuff Pain

General No Comments »

There is a group of four muscles and some tendons that surround the shoulder and are wrapped in a bursa sac. This is called the rotator cuff. These muscles and tendons are important because they help to stabilize the shoulder.

Rotator cuff pain occurs when these muscles or tendons become damaged. This injury often happens to men who are over the age of 40. Athletes are very susceptible to this type of injury. Any athlete that throws, or uses an overhead motion can sustain this injury. Many times the injury will be indicated by a popping sound or a tearing sensation.

Rotator cuff pain usually happens when there is decreased range of motion, inability to lay on the affected shoulder without pain, sleep that is interrupted at night due to pain, weakness, difficulty getting dressed or reaching behind the back, pain with throwing or reaching overhead and a dull ache in the upper arm. The pain usually occurs in the front of the shoulder and radiates down the arm.

When rest, anti-inflammatory medicines, steroid injections or physical therapy doesn’t work anymore, surgery is usually indicated. The arm is usually immobilized to allow the shoulder to heal and is followed by rotator cuff therapy.

Menopause and Beyond

General No Comments »

Menopause is a fact of life that affects every woman around the world. Menopause is an important time in a woman’s life, during which she experiences physical and mental changes as a result of hormonal retuning. Menopause is a period of hormonal change which can occur for most women around their 40s, or for some as late as their latter 50s, but on average , the age is 51.

Menopause is associated with reduced functioning of the ovaries due to aging, resulting in lower levels of estrogen and other hormones. Menopause, whether natural or induced, is called premature when women reach it at age 40 or younger. While the thought of reaching menopause is not comforting to most women, spare a thought for those who have gone through early menopause, sometimes affecting women in their 20’s.

Some of the emotional changes experienced by women undergoing perimenopause or menopause can include: Irritability, feelings of sadness, lack of motivation, anxiety, aggressiveness, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, mood changes, and tension. If you are feeling irritable and sad, there is a good chance it could be related to menopause, but the above symptoms are not linked only to menopause, and can indicate other underlying conditions.

Menopause marks the end of the fertility era for women, and how a woman deals with its onset is an individual thing. Women have to make important decisions about managing the symptoms of menopause, including the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Only a third of menopausal women in the United States try HRT and of those who do, eventually half of them drop the therapy. Not all women need estrogen and some women cannot take it due to adverse side effects.

Some women also report success in using natural remedies to treat the unpleasant symptoms. Many find that yoga can ease menopausal symptoms as it focuses on helping them unite the mind, body, and spirit to create balance.

Women experiencing premature menopause (age 40 or younger) which has not been medically induced, may have the same symptoms, including hot flashes, sleep disturbances and vaginal dryness as women who begin menopause at a typical age. However, compared to women who reach menopause at the typical age, women who experience premature menopause—whether natural or induced— spend more years without the benefits of estrogen, which put them at greater risk for some health problems later in life, such as osteoporosis and heart disease.

Premenopausal women who experience induced menopause (hysterectomy) at an early age, are faced with menopause and its effects without the gradual adjustment time of perimenopause , and many of them also report symptoms of tearfulness, mood swings, and feeling blue or discouraged.

Not everyone will have a problem with menopause symptoms. Approximately one third of all women get no noticeable symptoms other than their periods becoming erratic and then stopping. Another one third of women have moderate symptoms. The remaining one third of women have very strong symptoms which tend to have a longer duration.

The good news is no one needs to suffer with the symptoms of menopause, since in the 21st century, there are many ways to treat its symptoms. Menopause can be a creative time, and may also be the beginning of a wonderful new phase, which if managed properly, can be a fantastic time in a woman’s life. Post-menopause is all the years beyond menopause, and considering that our life expectancy has been greatly extended, there is a lot of time to put the distress of menopause behind and continue on with renewed energy.

Facial Hyperhidrosis

General No Comments »

Do you suffer from Facial Hyperhidrosis? It is a horrid condition in which you sweat excessively from your face, however most sufferers also sweat from their underarms, palms or bottoms of their feet. Hyperhidrosis affects over 8 million people around the world though, so you are not alone in your plight!

If you’re looking for ways to manage this condition, here are a few tips which may help you out:

Firstly, carry around a handkerchief wherever you go. Being able to wipe the sweat off your brow is quite handy, you don’t want to be using your sleeve!

Secondly, you can try an antiperspirant gel. Not many people know about this, but for Facial Hyperhidrosis sufferers, there is the option to use a gel to prevent excess facial sweating. Just apply a thin coating each morning and you’re good to go.

Another thing you can try is installing a fan on top of your car and also placing a fan on your desk at work. It helps to have as much cool air being blown in your face as you can. The more places you can keep a fan by your side the better!

Lastly, if you want to combat Facial Hyperhidrosis, take up a hobby such as Yoga, it will help you to alleviate stress and relieve anxiety, both of which can cause excessive facial sweating.

Rotator Cuff Injury Definition and Treatment

General No Comments »

A rotator cuff injury is one of the most common injuries amongst athletes and laborers. This is because the shoulder and arm are the most used and abused of the joints in the body for these people.

The rotator cuff is the group of tendons and muscles that form the shoulder joint and hold the arm into the shoulder socket. The cuff has a protective layer around it that is fluid filled which helps to reduce the amount of inflammation from friction between the cuff and the bones in the shoulder.

A person who has a rotator cuff injury will find that it becomes very hard to reach up over their head and that any movement of the shoulder joint is very painful. They may also experience weakness in the arm that is injured.

A rotator cuff injury is usually treated initially with rest and an ice/heat combination. If this fails to work, the physician will ask the patient to participate in some physical therapy treatments. These treatments will help to rehabilitate the shoulder joint. If the physical therapy is unsuccessful or the original injury is serious enough, rotator cuff surgery may be performed and then followed up with physical therapy.
